XVII. the who: naked eye (live)
heute ist es zum zweiten mal so, dass das video nicht genau die gemeinte version des lieds zeigen kann. hier zum video oder hier zum audio. es ist der 17. dezember 1982 und wir sind mit the who in den mapple leaf gardens in toronto. es ist die erste zugabe am letzten konzert ihrer abschiedstournee mit the clash im vorprogramm. nach keith moons tod am 7. september 1978 nahmen die spannungen zwischen den anderen drei zu. viereinhalb jahre später wars vorbei. in den 80ern spielten the who am von bob geldof organisierten live aid und rauften sich 1989 für eine 25-jahre-jubliläums-tour. mitte der 90er mit zak starkey – jawoll, das ist ringos sohn – am schlagzeug für die ersten vollständigen aufführungen vom konzeptalbum quadrophenia begann sich allmählich ein neuer möglichkeitsraum zu öffnen. aber: am 27. juni 2002 starb gründungsmitglied und bassist john entwistle am abend bevor the who wieder richtig auf tour gehen wollten… das gab pete townshend und roger daltrey zu denken und machte möglich, dass sie ihre von gegenseitiger anziehung und ablehnung geprägte beziehung in richtung tiefe freundschaft updgraden konnten. die tour wurde john entwistle gewidmet und fand mit pino palladino am bass und john ‘rabbit’ bundrick an den tasten statt. seither sind the who immer wieder unterwegs auf den den bühnen der welt und haben 2 weitere alben veröffentlicht. 2007 konnte ich sie nach jahren des aufsaugens der alben live at leeds, live at the isle of wight festival und meer am moon and stars in locarno bei donner und blitz erleben. dort habe ich eine fantastische für mich definitive version des für heute ausgewählten songs «naked eye» erlebt. mehr darüber erzähle ich in der allerersten ausgabe von plättele, der radiosendung, die ich mit marianne barth auf kanal k monatlich äthere. «naked eye» ist eine mutige einladung sich selbst nicht alles zu glauben, was mensch denkt. eine einladung zur multiperspektive. ein demütige zugeben, dass mit blossem auge betrachtet alles gut aussieht, sich aber eigentlicht gar nicht so abgespielt hat. wie viele von townshends texten ist naked eye vielschichtig und tief. was mich auch berührt: dass roger jeweils die erste strophe singt und pete die zweite und die gegensätzlichkeit im ausdruck für mich auch immer ein symbol für ihre über viele jahre angespannte beziehung.

today is the second time that the linked video can’t show the song in the exact version i have chosen. go here for the video or here for the audio. it's december 17, 1982 and we're with the who at the mapple leaf gardens in toronto. it's the first encore at the last concert of their farewell tour with the clash as the opening act. after keith moon’s death on september 7, 1978, tensions between the other three increased. four and a half years later, it was over. in the 80s, the who played at live aid organized by bob geldof and reunited for a 25th anniversary tour in 1989. in the mid-90s, with zak starkey - yes, that's ringo's son - on drums for the first full performances of the concept album quadrophenia, a new realm of possibility gradually began to open up. but: on june 27, 2002, founding member and bassist john entwistle died the night before the who were due to go on tour again... this gave pete townshend and roger daltrey food for thought and allowed them to update their relationship of mutual attraction and rejection into one of deep friendship. the tour was dedicated to john entwistle and featured pino palladino and john 'rabbit' bundrick on bass. since then, the who have continued to tour the world's stages and have released 2 more albums. in 2007, after years of soaking up their albums live at leeds, live at the isle of wight festival and more, i was able to experience them at moon and stars in locarno with thunder and lightning. there i experienced a fantastic, for me, definitive version of the song chosen for today, «naked eye». i'll tell you more about it in the very first edition of plättele, the radio show i host monthly with marianne barth on kanal k. «naked eye» is a courageous invitation not to believe everything you think. an invitation to multiple perspectives. a humble admission that everything looks good from the outside, but didn't actually happen that way. like many of townshend's lyrics, naked eye is multi-layered and deep. what also touches me is that roger sings the first verse and pete the second, and to me the contrast in expression has always been a symbol for their over many years strained relationship.
