II. jeff buckley: dream brother (live)
am 2. dezember reisen wir zurück ins jahr 1994 nach new orleans in den howlin’ wolf club. dort spielt jeff buckley mit band. «dream brother» ist der letzte song auf dem einzigen zu jeff’s lebzeiten veröffentlichen album grace. es gehört für mich in die kategorie alben, die mit mir zu tun haben – zeitlose scheiben, die mich im jetzt noch genauso berühren und bewegen wie beim ersten hören. unvergleichlch, die dringlichkeit, die intensität, die ausdrucks- und strahlkraft von jeffs stimme. das geht tief ins herz und unter die haut. «grace» ist eine zeitlose, durchgängig grandiose scheibe von stilistischer vielvalt mit bedeutungsschwangeren, metaphorischen texten über die allgegenwärtigkeit des todes, über hingebungsvolle liebe und das verlassenwerden sowie über seine beziehung zum entfremdeten vater. und genau darum geht’s im song: jeff warnt seinen freund davor, nicht dasselbe zu tun wie sein vater: die schwangere freundin zu verlassen… da ist ganz viel schmerz, wut und trauer, die jeff mit seiner stimmer auszudrücken mag. nicht nur in diesem song.

on december 2nd we travel back to new orleans in the year 1994 to the howlin' wolf club. jeff buckley and his band are playing there. «dream brother» is the last song on grace, the only album released during jeff's lifetime. this album belongs into the category of albums that have something to do with me – timeless records that touch and move me just as much now as when i first heard them. jeff's voice with it’s urgency, intensity, expressiveness and radiance is incomparable. what you hear moves deep into the heart and under the skin. «grace» is a timeless, consistently great record of stylistic diversity with meaningful, metaphorical lyrics about the omnipresence of death, about devoted love and being abandoned as well as about his relationship with his estranged father. and that's exactly what the song is about: jeff warns his friend not to do the same as his father: to leave his pregnant girlfriend... there is a lot of pain, anger and grief that jeff is able to express with his voice. not only in this song.
